While the races for county supervisor and sheriff are getting crowded, the races for some local school boards look like ghost towns. No candidates have signed up to run for 13 seats that’ll need to be filled on the governing boards of the Sunnyside Unified, Ajo Unified, Altar Valley Elementary, Baboquivari Unified, and Continental Elementary school districts. Candidates arrive: School board elections in Pima County are filling up with candidates, the Arizona Daily Star’s Jessica Votipka reports. There are 43 candidates for 48 open seats, which is a little higher than it was in 2022. So far, nobody has signed up to run in the Ajo Unified, Altar Valley, Baboquivari Unified, and Continental Elementary districts. (March 24)
Hat in the ring: A math and science teacher in the Amphitheater Unified School District who’s been recognized nationally for her work, Robyn Yewell, joined the race for Pima County Superintendent of Schools, county records show. Maribel Lopez was running against incumbent Dustin Williams, but withdrew from the race. Yewell and Williams are both Democrats. (March 28)
Open seat: The Catalina Foothills governing board is looking to fill the seat of Amy Bhola, a longtime board member and teacher who died last month, the Star’s Jessica Votipka reports. The term for Bhola’s immediate successor will last through the end of the year, with the seat also on the November ballot as a two-year term. Candidates who would like to be considered for the position must submit an affidavit of qualification and candidate appointment questionnaire by May 10. (April 15)
